A little bit of ‘Hygge’.

The warm glow of a candle is hygge.

If you’re in Denmark or in Danish company anytime soon it may be useful to know that you won’t get far without hearing the word ‘Hygge’.

The concept of ‘Hygge’ is hard to explain and even harder to pronounce, the Danish word 'hygge' (pronounced 'hooga' or ‘hue – gah’) which translates roughly to 'cosiness'.

It’s a word worth getting to know as it’s well documented as being the recipe for a happier life! In short, hygge means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people.

The warm glow of candlelight is hygge. Friends and family – that’s hygge too. There's nothing more hygge than sitting round a table, discussing the big and small things in life. Perhaps hygge explains why the Danes are some of the happiest people in the world? ‘’ one thing we know is that it’s each Dane uses  over 5.79 kilos of candles each year!

In winter time the Danes use them all day.

Imagine our delight to know then that THE Number One way to apply a little bit of ‘Hygge’ to your own life wherever you are in the World is through lighting candles, whatever the weather or the season – they are EVERYWHERE, even the classroom!

Just light a candle!

‘’ I am certain of one thing; If there’s something that Danes don’t want to run short of, it is toilet paper and candles. Luckily you can get both in even the smallest shop’’ Roger Beale, Brit living in Denmark, in Politiken.

There’s so much more to learn about Hygge, one of our favourite books on the subject is; - ‘Hygge’ the Danish Art of Happiness by Marie Tourell Søderberg.

And of course pay a visit to our online shop and choose which one will help you Hygge here.
